Independence

Over the fourth of July weekend, amid the flurry of my graduate course, packing up our home and preparing for a week at the shore, we enjoyed a visit from our friends, Shiloh, Ivan and our (probable) son-in-law- Malachi. Much to our delight, it provided an excuse to visit the Philadelphia historical sites without boarding a yellow school bus for a field trip. Ironically, however, we were still laden with lunch boxes to satiate the voracious appetites of our two tiniest tourists. Our carriage ride around Washington Square proved both intriguing and eventful, as Malachi grew nauseas and vomited towards the conclusion of the story of Independence. Nevertheless, we were lucky enough to expose our guests not only to the quaint splendor of Society Hill, but also the remarkable glory of the Schuylkill Expressway, complete with -not one- but two gaper delays. Overall, however, they were delighted by the romance of the city, Doylestown and the shops in KOP (of which I am rather smitten as well). I suppose there is no better locale to commemorate the sacrifice of our forefathers who established such an unprecedented and gloriously free nation. (And thank you to Tony Snow for championing the values of liberty so very well!)
