Genetics and the Jersey Shore

To just affirm that Eowyn enjoys the beach would be a gross understatement –akin to simply conceding that Cheney is smarter than the president. (Hope you got to see the speech http://www.aei.org/speech/100050) In truth, rather, Eowyn adores the beach. She appears to have inherited my genetic predisposition for, Kohrs’ Brothers, Dot’s Donuts and Johnson’s Popcorn. I do believe this will prove to be a sign of great intelligence.
Rather invariably, Eowyn has requested “Go Beeeeeaach” day trips with an exclusive travel party entourage: “Aunt Bekah” consistently wins first place, a rank achieved by saccharine manipulations, brightly colored baubles and –not least of which- her effusive excitement and adventurous spirit inherent to a sexy singleton. However, after having contracted viral meningitis (most likely from wading in the Jersey shores), Rebekah’s replacement has been named as “Jackie”- her maternal grandmother whose selection of the “youthful” name “Nonnie” proved so verbally prohibitive that Eowyn has elected to refer to her strictly by her Christian name. My mother has earned her second place ranking due to her exuberant greetings, prolific pink attire and general nonsensical interactions with Eowyn who welcomes the liberal sips of sweet tea and iced coffee and the operatic serenades of Wee Sing Bible Song classics. Finally, the third option when “Bekah” is hospitalized and “Jackie” is at her gym’s tanning bed remains the (absent) conversationalist on the other end of Eowyn’s Barbie phone: “Poppy.”

Melissa: Eowyn, who are you talking to? Eowyn: (Pink phone to the ear) “Poppy!”

Everytime.

“Poppy” is the superhero that still front flips into waves and transforms jaunts around his backyard into a jungle safari for his two constant outdoor companions- Malachi & Eowyn. Their adoration is not surprising as (sheepishly) I must admit, he was always my hero too. “Jackie” has always worn pink, even exuberantly greeting our half-dead Shih-Tzus while faithfully serenading us with (faltering) falsetto resonance. And “Aunt Bekah” has always been charmingly adventurous with a weakness for saccharine indulgences left over from the Dobson-sanctioned potty-training tactics (circa 1988). Interestingly, Eowyn’s travel entourage requests are consistently without alteration. And on Thursday, as I watched my two-year old consume a large slice of Mack N Mancos pizza with a satisfying snaggle-toothed grin, I knew that they were the lucky ones to be included on her short list. She makes my day at the beach better than well…a day at the beach.

I LOVE the watermelon bathing suit. Two pieces are sort of off limits for Anna at this juncture. Wish we could be there for the OCNJ trips!
