The Next Cole Hamels

Somewhat abashedly, I must confess the primary impetus for my love of baseball has generally been centered upon a particularly handsome man, in uniform. Initially, it was my super jock-nearly gone pro-dad, whose (seemingly) unparalleled athleticism has always inspired awe and pride. Then, it was the “Jason Werth eye candy” of the game, which made the competition all the more worthwhile to audience. Later, dating a player (baseball, that is) always made the game far more engaging. However, in recent months, it is my own brother Andrew, the miracle child (saving my father from death by estrogen) who has been the impetus for buying the overpriced peanuts and Crackerjacks. With his prolific pitches firing at nearly 90 miles an hour, Andrew has deservedly been named the Lehigh Valley’s number one conference pitcher for 2009. Destined for the majors, yesterday, Andrew helped lead Parkland High School to the third year as conference champs. Admittedly, Andrew is pretty amazing, but more impressive is his humility. He has always been a kid with character- a generational novelty. I believe it began as a toddler with an affinity for performing Sunday School songs on the front lawn with all the gusto of a Gaither vocal band concert. Always indulging my octogenarian grandmother in lengthy morning conversations, Andrew was relational and convinced of his conservative ideals, even from a young age. My delight in his recent athletic accolades is only surpassed by my admiration for his integrity, his confidence to vote “right” and his ability to kneel down and take questions- “Hi, Uncle Andoo, How are you?” -from his tiniest adoring fans. Andrew, you’re the next Cole Hamels. And I am proud to have known and loved you from your diapered diva days.

Gosh! Can we get a scheduled appearance perhaps from your bro! Too bad we're not closer, we'd swing the boys by for a game. They'd love that!
