Around the Table

As one celebrated Open Spaces radio personality posited, it is not so much the food on the table, but those around it that creates a memorable Thanksgiving. This year, however, in our case, I would contend that the Turkey-fryer was the hero and is what made the holiday most unforgettable. Peanut-oil at inferno-like temperatures did the work sanctioned by Paula Deen to “cook” (read: deep fry) two birds to otherworldly perfection. And it was “slap your Mama” good.

My children, groomed to appropriate holiday standards, were beside themselves with delight by the company of their cousins and general conviviality of the occasion. Conversations ran the gamut from the plausibility of General Patton’s assassination to living wills and guardianship appointments. Nothing says Happy Thanksgiving like poignant deliberations on decisions regarding one’s untimely demise. Though perhaps it is not the estate inheritance one bequeaths, but rather those tearful mourners around your attorney’s conference room table that really make your life (and said holidays more meaningful). And for those of whom I speak, I am profoundly thankful for your affection (and a flattering eulogy). Happy Thanksgiving.

** Eowyn Anecdote: Teacher: “Eowyn, what are you thankful for?” Eowyn: “I am thankful for the beach.” Every other kid says, “My Mom” or “My dog” or “My brother.” Not Eowyn. That’s it- Just the beach. (and frankly, I love her more for it)
