90th Birthday Surprise

Earl and Peg Kulp are two of my heroes and not just because they’re Calvinists who defend gun ownership (which would be reason enough). Rather, while their octogenarian peers (e.g. Jimmy Carter) have been seduced by senility and converted to liberal pandering, they have remained stalwart in their libertarian principles and unswerving patriotism. They love God, their country and the Phillies with nearly the same measure of fierce tenacity.

Having endured trial and tribulation unbeknownst to most emergent hipsters and Twitter junkies, they have not ceased in their laboring for good, their commitment to service and their love through sacrifice. Frugality and gratitude are virtues well-acquainted around their dining table. Discontented complaints and narcissistic disclosures are (refreshingly) absent from their discourse. Their love of hymns and baseball and white bread with bacon is quite inspiring, making me confident that I will never see them on Facebook, eating sushi, shopping at Whole Foods, or watching CNN. A testament to integrity and industry and ingenuity, my grandparents portray the platitudes others prominently post upon mantel-piece placards. “As for me and my house” has been the motto they have modeled. And it is because of this, I hope a little bit of me resembles them.
