Church Shopping

Since we have relocated to Hawaii, Jason and I dabbled on the dark side: church hopping.  And Hawaii certainly does not disappoint with the sundry Sunday buffet:  We have hymned beside birds, prayed in gymnasiums on the foul line, been flanked by geriatrics in search of young meat and witnessed sexy, shimmying cleavage bearing choirs (for real)- A long and tedious journey that has - on the bright side- served to enervate any separation anxieties for our children since they have seen the inside of every church nursery east of Pearl Harbor. We could regal you with tales of the "visitor initiation" family photo and dubious tattooed nursery workers resembling parolees and preachers in shorts and Apple technology t-shirts.  And of course, the ubiquitous "lei" accessory.  Another time.

While, we don't insist upon pyrotechnics, a coffee bar, X-treme youth programs, sofas in the sanctuary, or a worship leader with an ichthus tat and a self-titled album of songs that all sound the same, we cannot abide a church that is not rigorously gospel-centered and avowedly ambivalent on the atrocity of abortion. Sadly, these criterion have sent many a bulletin to the recycling bin.  Gospel-grounded expository preaching is as endangered on Oahu as the business suit.

Not unrelated, the Aloha spirit (apparently) insists upon abortion ambivalence and yet silent inaction condones and exonerates what has become palatable genocide in our nation. Stewardship of creation and the earth's resources is given preeminence in Hawaii.  However, stewardship of the Creator's image-bearers is a vastly more critical, moral and Biblical obligation.

.....Thus, it was wonderfully refreshing to sit under the compelling preaching of both Neil Kulp and Todd Pruitt, who are both unswerving and unequivocal in their defense of the gospel and sanctity of human life.

But now Melissa Kulp Frankenfield has "landed" on Oahu and it will never be the same: "Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you." Deut. 31:6

Be salt and light! Way to stand strong on your foundation. Unfortunately it is the inability to stand for, well, anything, that has birthed many of the weak churches we have today.
